  • [es-pree de less-ka/-iay] (idiom) A witty remark that occurs to you too late, literally on the way down the stairs. The Oxford Dictionary of Quotations defines esprit de l'escalier as, "An untranslatable phrase, the meaning of which is that one only thinks on one's way downstairs of the smart retort one might have made in the drawing room."

Dwell looks WONDERFUL! I've been enjoying two "new to me" mags lately... CRAFT and MAKE.

And you and my sister keep writing about Etsy. I need to give closer inspection.

As for your statue- I know that one! I was just thinking the other day that I can no longer remember the significance of horse statue legs... one up and they died in battle? Was that it? I seem to recall there being about 2 or 3 things about the legs and their significance...

Jennifer,
Definitely check out Etsy! It's fun, though fairly addictive. (I have a mild internet shopping problem.) I can give you links to some of my favorite stores. It makes me feel better about spending money there, because I know it's going directly to real people. And the people on there are really nice. A lot have blogs as well, so you can get a sense for who they are. I love it.

I think that there is significance for statues of military folks on horseback. I just found an interestingly long Wikipedia article about equestrian statues. It's interesting in its length. Well some for the content, too. According to the article, the legs thing is a popular myth and can only be circumstantially corroborated. I know that when I lived in Prague, where there are many equestrian statues (including the largest in the world), we were taught about the leg thing on our walking tours. So, whatever, wikipedia.

Thanks Claire- for the horse info as well as a good place to spend more money!!!

Claire-Maybe you can post your favorite etsy stores in a blog entry with some pics. Would love to check them out.
PS Those $204 airfares are INCREDIBLE.

AG feels like she has just read your personal diary. Having said that, can we get the lucky numbers on the otherside of the fortune?

Maryam, I'm going to post about my favorite etsy stores later this week. Thanks for the idea.

AG, I guess that's because this post is just notes I scribbled on a page as I went through my Friday. I don't remember the numbers and I think I threw out the fortune... DC was fun, but I'm beyond exhausted, having got home with enough time to eat something, pet Frank and head to school. Tomorrow I'll post something.
